		<description>

Engy Mohsen Sarhan is an artist, writer, and curator whose work spans self-published printed matter and collective, activist-driven constellations.

Her research focuses on the emergence of independent art schools in the Arab world, with particular attention to their entanglement with foreign cultural funding and their strategies for negotiating cultural sovereignty through decolonial pedagogies. She holds an MSc in Modern Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Oxford, an MA in Transdisciplinary Studies in the Arts from Zürich University of the Arts, and a joint BSc in Architecture and Urban Design from the German University in Cairo and the Technical University of Brandenburg.

She was previously part of Artists for Artists (AfA) Masterclass: Radical Care, MASS Alexandria, Roznama Studio Program, and School of Commons. Alongside her self-published books, her writing has appeared in Mada Masr, Mondoweiss, NO NIIN Magazine, the&#38;nbsp;Oxford Middle East Review, among others.

She is a founding member of K-oh-llective, a platform for resource-sharing among artists, writers, and curators in Egypt and the Arab world, and part of the curatorial team of Les Complices*, a self-organised community-based art space in Zürich.

Artist Statement (2021)

Throughout my body of work, I am interested in the discourse around socially-engaged practices. While I navigate the overlap between art and architecture, spatial design remains front and center in my practice.

The tendency to ‘include the other’ is evidently informed by my practice of architecture, as it embraces scenarios that think of how a space can be best designed to accommodate its inhabitants. Next to that, I work with conversation as a medium, text, drawing, and photography while borrowing the tools of performative research.
Being part of independent programs of art education and pedagogical spaces pushed me to define, reshape, articulate, and situate my practice while still maintaining creative exploration. That allowed me to later on experiment with designing and hosting formats that invite non-artists and artists to produce knowledge about the connection between artists and their immediate context. This opened up a lot of questions about the organization of spaces for art practice, research and education. My work explores different modes of participation, factors that impact social gatherings and their capacity for collective knowledge-making, and how to allow for conversations to unfold. Through looking into said spatial typologies, I try to rethink existing models of meeting, while playing around with scenography, seating arrangements and venues of meeting.
My work aspires to design situations and to plan experiences that perform social dreaming and actions. I consider myself to be someone who is dependant on working with others, leaning towards collaborative processes whenever I can.

My early works explored ways of how conversations that happen through casual encounters can create a physical space or an image of one. Then, I shifted positions to explore the capacity of space to let conversations unravel. The work, therefore, continues to foster an interest in the tension between spaces and conversations, and how one can lead to the creation and shaping of the other.&#38;nbsp;

&#38;nbsp;2022/ Online Exhibition &#38;amp; Billboards

In collaboration with Soukaina Joual, curated by Aline Lenzhofer

︎

philomena+ and fluc + fluc wanne, Vienna

Machi Mashy is a project that focuses on the use of the Arabic language, dialects and colloquials as a medium and the subject matter.

For its second articulation, Machi Mashy was exhibitied as part of “Longing for Community”,

an online and offline exhibition offering many positions to find a common language and sounds of togetherness.

Curated by Aline Lenzhofer, the text is published online, alongside a billboard presentation at fluc + fluc wanne in Vienna and an online listening session. Triggered by a shared interest in T/rap music from North Africa and the Levant, the two artists explore street slang and urban language drawn from some tracks.&#38;nbsp;

The project is supported by Mophradat and AFAC. “Longing for Community” is a philomena+ project in collaboration with fluc + fluc wanne, supported by the city of Vienna. Photo credits:

In an attempt to analyze the diversity of the Arabic language and its borders, the artists invite you to a listetning session to discover different expressions in Moroccan Darija and Egyptian Aameya. They weave the tracks of Madd, Small X, Abyusif, MOUSV, Fawzi and Shabjdeed –among others– into their own reflections on language and their different dialects.

Machi Mashy: Art Work

Machi Mashy, or in other words “Not Working” focuses on the use of language, dialects and colloquialism as a medium and the subject matter. Despite their differences, Arabic dialects essentially grew from the same soil, Classical Arabic, yet each dialect can sound as foreign as another language altogether to an untrained ear. And so, a bridge can be created to enable a cross-dialogue between artists (and other speakers) from Arabic-speaking lands.

When put in situations that require us to talk about our work, we would usually shift between Arabic and English/French when it comes to specific terminology (Art Speak). That is not because the ِArabic language lacks this terminology in any way, quite the contrary. It is because our occupied tongues are not exposed to those terms in Arabic as much, and so they’re not as easily exchanged and circulated in casual conversations with our peers.

Machi Mashy was exhibited as part of “But these forms need to be created”, at Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre, Ramallah (PA), curated by Adele Jarrar. This articulation included a selection of terms related to individuals who engage in collaborative art practices. Departing from “Art-Work”, words in Classical Arabic are dissected then their derivatives are reexamined through three dialects; Moroccan, Egyptian, and Palestinian. Parallel to this, Mohamed Abdelkarim reflects on the linguistic perceptions between “The Institution” and “The Intellectual” in the political/cultural field. Design by Mooni Studio.&#38;nbsp;

 The project is supported by Mophradat and AFAC. The exhibition at KSCC is supported

by the A.M Qattan Foundation, through the ‘Visual Arts: A Flourishing Field’ (VAFF) Project, funded by Sweden. Photo credits: Tamara Saif.

How To Love Many In Many Ways

︎︎︎ ︎︎︎

 2021/ A Collection of Games + Exercises

In collaboration with Gabriel Hensche, edited by Ismail Fayed, visual identity by Engy Aly.&#38;nbsp;

Based on the assumption that one can intentionally perform falling in love (and subsequently fall out of love as well), artists Engy Mohsen and Gabriel Hensche

invited others to develop a game or exercise to respond to the question: How to Love Many in Many Ways?

 Nine contributors responded to that question with game + exercises ranging from the artistic, to the scientific, the somatic and the satirical;

Eliana Otta, Eleonora Toniolo,&#38;nbsp;Ingo Niermann (The Army of Love), Mohamed Al-Bakeri, Petra Mrša, Philip Ullrich,&#38;nbsp;Rania Atef, Raúl Hott, Shahd Omar.

During her studio residency

at Rote Fabrik, Engy organised various moments to play/test/encounter the games with others

in Zürich, stemming from a belief that this question can only be addressed collectively.The project is currently still in the works, with a few of games having been tested and played. The intention is to publish a beta version of all nine positions (games + exercises) online, to follow the logic of print/play at home.

The project started out during the Homebound Residency (2020) by Warehouse421 and continued further during the Pro Helvetia Studio Residency at Rote Fabrik (2021), and will be part of School of Commons (2022). Thanks to Maha Maamoun and Tara Lasrado who provided mentorship and guidance throughout both residencies. Photo credits:

How to Love Many in Many Ways by Engy Mohsen and Gabriel Hensche. The titular game includes
a set of questions paired with rituals that invite you to care for the self, connect with others, and be more attentive to more-than-humans in your surroundings.

Embodied Encounters by Shahd Omar. Exercises that playfully attempt to redefine consent as the process of establishing agreements, and how to communicate them beyond verbal exchanges.

Bad Mother by Rania Atef. A
card game that critically —and most importantly satirically—scrutinizes the societal gaze for maternal love and domestic labor as well as the criterion of a ‘Good Mother’.

Take That Loving Grace by Philip Ullrich. One player acts as a ‘machine’, following predetermined instructions. The ‘human’ player is much more fickle, but if they do
everything right, the machine will go down. Two opposites meet, the power balance is off—a reason to love?

Notes on Collaboration is a publication with curated personal responses to an invitation to think about the notion of togetherness and collaboration in an expanded sense. Each of the authors come from a different artistic discipline, yet all work with collaborative practices which allowed them to engage with the subject differently, sharing propositional or reflexive stances on past choices, faults, and doubts, to engage you with their thought process.

Notes on Collaboration includes a personal essay, a manifesto, a conversation, an open letter and a two-player board game.
With texts from

Rana Ashraf, Dina Jereidini, Omar Kassab, Engy Mohsen, and Qaaf Laam Collective and further contributions by Sherifa Hamid and Ahmed Morsi, Ma Yo with an excerpt from Hal Foster and Josh Winfield. A guest performance by Mariam Azmy. Design by Engy Mohsen and Youssef Salah. Photography by Eslam Abd El Salam.&#38;nbsp;
